Sea Level Rise Explorer
— Point Lookout State Park, MD
About the project
Sea Level Rise Explorer: Point Lookout is an immersive, interactive VR and web-based experience that brings visitors into one of Maryland’s most iconic coastal parks. Through 360-degree video, aerial views, and interactive 3D models, the project helps users visualize how sea level rise is already reshaping Point Lookout State Park and explore nature-based solutions that can support both ecosystems and people.
Students played a central role in shaping this experience. Through the University of Maryland’s Partnership for Action Learning in Sustainability (PALS), Landscape Architecture students conducted site analysis, explored climate vulnerabilities, and developed design concepts for alternative visitor experiences, resilient infrastructure, and ecological restoration. Their research and ideas helped translate complex climate challenges into clear, place-based stories that users can explore and understand. Developed in collaboration with state agencies, park staff, faculty, and students, the project highlights marsh restoration, oyster reefs, and climate-resilient planning as pathways forward. It is designed as both an educational tool and a platform for public engagement, inviting visitors to learn, interact, and imagine how thoughtful choices today can shape the future of Point Lookout.
